The 39 Steps

The 39 Steps Theatre breaks

About the show

From John Buchan’s 1915 whodunnit novel, to Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 film adaptation, we now have The 39 Steps on the stage.  A classic farce sees an astonishing 139 roles covered by just four actors in a whirlwind of off-beat action.

Try to keep up as Richard Hannay meets a host of shady characters and mysterious men from overseas while trying to solve a mystery based upon the riddle of thirty-nine steps. This theatre break will make you marvel at a show that is clever enough to poke fun at its own absurdity.

What to expect from The 39 Steps

The 39 Steps theatre breaks are full of a dizzying array of costume changes as the actors skilfully leap from role to role. This fantastic play combines thrilling set-pieces – look for the train and the bi-plane – with a frenetic pace and regular laughs, all inside 100 minutes that’ll absolutely fly by as you close in on the identity of the murderer…

The 39 Steps is best enjoyed as part of a theatre package including accommodation in London. We offer a wide variety of top-class hotels in the city centre to suit all tastes and budgets. We’ll save you time and money when booking, and we can even offer discounted rail travel to London, to really take the stress out of arranging a break.

Interesting facts about The 39 Steps

  • This play first played to 90 people at the Georgian Theatre in Richmond, North Yorkshire, way back in 1996. It then went on a journey that took it across towns in the north of England, then to the fringes of London’s West End, then the West End itself, finally ending up winning awards for an appearance in New York’s Broadway – a journey almost as improbable as the script itself!
