In 1934 Robert Flaherty made a documentary about the Aran Islands which are three remote isles off the east coast of Éire. Each is home to a small subsistence population. A few years later, in 1978, George Stoney made a documentary titled ‘How the Myth Was Made’, which revealed how Flaherty had manipulated facts, events and, most interestingly, people in order to make his ethno-fiction. The Cripple of Inishmaan is set during the filming of Flaherty’s documentary and follows “Cripple” Billy (played by Daniel Radcliffe) who dreams of Hollywood glamour.
