Three of Britain’s top comedic actors star in this dazzling revival of Noël Coward’s sublime satire of snobbery, class and money, new and old. When the play was originally staged in 1951 it was Coward’s first comedy for a decade, and it opened at the Savoy Theatre to positive press reviews and a rapturous audience response. Sparks fly as a clash of cultures between Hollywood’s high-flying stars and England’s landed gentry, creates the space for hilarious dialogue and sharp social critique.
Relative Values tells the story of a young, titled British aristocrat, who plans to marry a Hollywood actress. To the shock of his elder relatives, it transpires that the actress is the sister of one of the family’s servants, and certainly not of reputable birth. The play is set entirely at the family’s country manor, Marshwood House, and sees the tightly wound class snobbery explode into a sea of confusion, disagreement and moral panic, with (although it is clichéd to say so) hilarious consequences.
This production of Relative Values is being performed by a superb cast, including Patricia Hodge, Caroline Quentin and Rory Bremner, making the most of a script, already brimming with wit and style. You can expect to hear staggeringly posh accents, sharp dialogue and unequivocal snobbery. Despite the bite in Noël Coward’s script and the often deplorable views of the characters, depictions of English aristocracy never fail to charm, breathing many levels of enjoyment into this glittering show, and establishing an inherent tension at its heart.
