Shakespeare in Love

Shakespeare in Love Theatre breaks

About the show

Young and penniless playwright William Shakespeare struggles with writer’s block in late Elizabethan England, until his world is transformed by an auditioning actor. The ambitious young actor, disguised as a man in order to gain work on the stage, is in fact the daughter of a wealthy merchant. The ensuing love affair sparks with intrigue, romance and creativity, as Shakespeare’s great tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, is born.

This highly anticipated play is the hottest ticket of 2014, staged in lavish dramatic style, directed by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod (Cheek by Jowl) and adapted by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot the Musical). With the original film version winning numerous Oscars, including best actress for Gwyneth Paltrow and best supporting actress for Judi Dench, the stage version brings a pedigree of high quality artistic flair to London’s West End.

Interesting facts about Shakespeare in Love

  • The script includes numerous anachronisms, such as mention of Virginia tobacco products at a time when Virginia was only just starting to be settled by Europeans, and was yet to be given the name.
  • With extensive references to other Elizabethan literature, much of it to Marlow and Shakespeare, the script is rich in subtle intertextuality.
  • Writer of the original script, Tom Stoppard, received critical acclaim for another work with Shakespearean inspiration, the now classic tragicomedy ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead’.
