Skylight is an award winning play that focusses almost exclusively on the meeting of two former lovers. Set on a cold winter’s evening in London, Kyra Hollis is visited unexpectedly by Tom Sergeant, with whom she once had a passionate affair. With Hollis a schoolteacher and Sergeant a successful, charming and wealthy restaurateur, the two have starkly different lifestyles, and with the years that have passed since their last meeting, it is not immediately apparent whether romance will be rekindled or old resentments reborn.
David Hare’s script was originally brought to the stage in 1995, arriving in the West End in 1996 and winning the Lawrence Olivier award for best play. This revival will combine the riveting script with prodigious acting and directing talent. Stephen Daldry, the award winning film and stage director, most famous for Billy Elliot (both the film and the musical), will conduct the acting veteran Bill Nighy and the rising star Carey Mulligan (both have impressive filmographies), in this captivating production. It is surely one of the hottest tickets of the summer.
With such an array of talent both onstage and behind the scenes, you can expect a performance that is simultaneously staged with polished professionalism and with intriguing informality. As there are so few characters, costumes and locations in the play, the actors must fully engage with the script in order to capture the audience’s imagination and convey the plethora of emotions and sentiments that are apparent in David Hare’s work. The focussed nature of the play will make for an intense but thoroughly rewarding evening.
