About the show

Memphis is the rock ‘n’ roll musical that has taken America by storm. After winning numerous awards on Broadway, including the Tony Award for best musical, Memphis the Musical embarked on a giant tour of the US before landing in London. In this West End production, Beverley Knight takes on the role of Felicia, ensuring that this critically acclaimed show is given the vocal star it deserves. A stunning mix of writing, singing, dancing and acting talent has been assembled for the hit show of the year.

The story follows Huey Calhoun, a prospective DJ in 1950s Memphis. His love of the electrifying rock ‘n’ roll music which is taking the black working class by storm, and fuelling a thriving underground music scene, motivates Huey to become a DJ for local radio. Because he is white, he is given the opportunities that would be unavailable to the talented black musicians that he venerates. As the exciting new music is brought to a larger audience, a golden era of jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, and rhythm & blues takes hold in Tennessee , making the perfect setting for Huey’s romance to develop with his star singer Felicia. In a world of prejudice and resentment, can their relationship and their music blossom to its full potential?

What to expect from Memphis

After stunning performances in The Bodyguard, Beverley Knight will be guaranteed to bring the house down with her unbelievable vocal abilities, soulful renditions and poignant acting. The musical charts the early rise of many of the musical genres we take for granted, such as rock ‘n’ roll, blues, jazz, gospel and boogie-woogie. African-American music is at the roots of the vast majority of Western music in the 20th century, and discovering these origins is not only insightful but is exciting and moving. As black Americans are still treated like second class citizens at this time, the show deals with serious issues, as well as providing a night of unforgettable entertainment. All of the various themes in Memphis the Musical are brought to life through a stunning soundtrack, performed by some of the most talented musical stars around.
