1984 tells the story of a dystopian future where the world is divided into three authoritarian superpowers. Winston Smith a resident of Airstrip One, formerly the United Kingdom, and is employed by the Ministry of Truth to edit newspapers past and present so that they conform to the party line. Orwell’s masterpiece is an exploration of power, truth and the human condition, and is widely heralded as one of the greatest books of the 20th century.
