Though the show is based on a 1932 novel and 1933 screenplay, and is set in 1933, the musical premiered on Broadway in 1980 and London in 1984.
The 1934 film of 42nd Street was so successful it saved Warner Brothers from bankruptcy
The director and choreographer of the original 1980 production, Gower Champion, died on the opening night of the show, leaving behind the greatest hit of his career
