The play, based on the 2005 film of the same name starring Judi Dench, the late Bob Hoskins and Will Young, is set in London in 1937. Recently widowed, Laura Henderson decides to spend both her time and money on a run-down former cinema in Great Windmill Street. She hires impresario Vivian Van Damm to run the newly renovated Windmill Theatre and the odd couple start to present a bill of non-stop variety acts. As the threat of war begins to loom over the country, something more is required to boost morale and box office takings. Then Mrs Henderson has a risque idea that gets audiences flooding in! As the Blitz hits London, the theatre becomes a refuge for all, with the spirit raising slogan, “We Never Close”.

The show’s tagline, “For the show to go on, the clothes must come off!” gives a clue to the idea that turned the fortunes of the theatre around.
