The Importance of Being Earnest

The Importance of Being Earnest Theatre breaks

About the show

David Suchet stars at Lady Bracknell in this new production of Oscar Wilde’s most famous of plays, The Importance of Being Earnest. Receiving a positive critical response at the time of its original release in 1895, the play has become recognised as the peak of Wilde’s satirical flair and of his public play writing career. The wit and charm of the script is immaculate; it offers a queue of riotous quips mocking the insular trivialities of Victorian high society.

The story revolves around two well-to-do gentlemen, Ernest and Algernon, who have both invented alter-egos in order to lead lives of respectability and debauchery simultaneously. Ernest hopes to marry Algernon’s cousin but as their dual lives begin to reveal themselves, a complex mesh of relationships leaves them somewhat flustered. This classic play is always a delight, but this new production is set to set the stage alight.

What to expect from The Importance of Being Earnest

You can expect elegant costumes and rose garden back drops, with tea-sets clinking and the doffing of boaters. All the trimmings of the Victorian aristocracy are on display, but it is imperative to remember that they are there to be mocked. It is therefore far more appropriate for you to expect a hilarious comedy of errors, performed with style and impeccable timing.
