About the show

The third play in The Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company’s residency at London’s Garrick Theatre and one that will be a very popular West End theatre break in 2016 is Sean Foley’s adaptation of The Painkiller by Francis Veber. It is the tale of two men, each in a lonely hotel room with an adjoining door. One of them is a killer and one of them wants to die. What could possibly go wrong?

Other plays in the season include Harlequinade, Romeo and Juliet, The Winter's Tale and The Entertainer.

Interesting facts about The Painkiller

  • This adaptation received its world premiere at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast on 29 September 2011. The acclaimed production also starred Kenneth Branagh, Rob Brydon, and was directed by Sean Foley.
  • Francis Veber has also written and directed both French and American films. Eight French-language films with which he has been involved have been remade by Hollywood including La Cage aux Folles (The Birdcage) and Les Fugitifs (Three Fugitives).
  • Sean Foley and Kenneth Branagh’s first collaboration was in 2001 along with Hamish McColl. Their production of The Play What I Wrote won the Olivier Award for Best Comedy after its West End run.
